Two years ago, in the fall and throughout the winter Ed lived in his car with his cat, Rusty. Finally, with the help of Vail Place he found permanent, supported housing.
Ed has struggled for 16 years with depression, which has made him feel
his life was "in pieces." The depression cost Ed his job, ended his 17-year marriage, and made it difficult to maintain an apartment. Besides living on just $200/mo., he developed hoarding issues that caused his previous residence, from which he was evicted, to look like a storage room.
He's been putting the pieces of his life together at Vail Place, getting help with housing, but also in other areas, like coping skills, handling his money, and developing relationships. Ed says, "The interactions are so beneficial on so many levels," referring to members and staff. He calls Vail Place, "therapy through community."
In the past Ed has felt that "sometimes I let my life happen to me." Now he's beginning to take control of his recovery, and he credits Vail Place . . . "I've felt much more benefit at Vail Place than through all the counseling I've had." |
