Vail Place Housing Services are supported by 
HOUSING
Services include a number of options ranging from independent living assessment to long-term support in one's own apartment or home. All housing services are directed toward safe, affordable independent living in the community.
Services are offered both at Vail Place and at the individual's home, and all services are coordinated with community agencies and relevant individuals.
Strong emphasis on continued support in the area of independent living skills training:
- Housekeeping
- cooking and nutrition
- budgeting, and
- problem solving
Staff provides wide variety of assistance on all housing options, including:
- applying for housing subsidies
- rental applications
- moving arrangements
Plan is developed to address areas of skill building and support systems required to succeed in independent community living.
Transitional Housing:
Vail Place holds the lease to two apartments and covers all monthly utility costs and 70% of the rent. Occupants receive all housing services and develop a plan for a permanent residence within two months of their occupancy.
Transitional housing services also available to those who wish to sign their own lease at an apartment complex, but who may require ongoing support.
EMPLOYMENT
Employment services range from pre-vocational work experiences to competitive placement in the community. All services coordinated to ensure successful experience and transition.
Employment Services at the Agency:
Pre-Vocational Services:
Day-to-day activities necessary to running the agency provide work opportunities. These include, but are not limited to: janitorial, clerical, food service, snack bar, horticulture, outreach, maintain attendance records, compile research data and write and type articles for a monthly newsletter.
Participation in the daily work of the program provides the opportunity to build upon capabilities, provides social interaction and allows individuals to establish a regular pattern of work and develop a positive work ethic.
Employment Services in the Community:
1. Transitional Employment (TE) – offered through the Minneapolis facility:
Provides opportunities to work in part-time, entry-level jobs in the community.
- Participation in pre-vocational services encouraged prior to TE placements
- Staff person trains for a position, then trains member
- Vail Place guarantees coverage to the employer for all scheduled work shifts by staff or member
- weekly T.E. dinners/meetings for support and to discuss job-related issues are offered
- Typically, six-nine placements at a TE site
- Variety of job sites, such as:
- Janitorial/maintenance
- Retail stock work
- Mail room support
- Food service
- employer responsible for worker’s compensation and member’s salary (at least minimum wage)
2. Supported Employment:
Assistance and ongoing staff support to attain employment in community jobs. Services include, but not limited to:
- job search
- resume writing
- interviewing
- on-the-job problem solving
Assistance may continue indefinitely or until regular support is not required.
3. Competitive Employment:
Offers many of the services of supported employment, with complete independence on the job. Individuals receive help in their job search, resume writing and interviewing. Periodic support and assistance in evaluating and helping with special work accommodations (ADA) may also be requested.
4. Job Skills Class:
Weekly job skills classes are held at each facility, with focus on skill building in areas related to job search and job retention. A comprehensive curriculum has been designed to establish a structured learning process; exercises in personal development are included as well.
SUPPORTED EDUCATION
Provides opportunities, assistance and support to individuals to identify and achieve educational and career goals. Students encouraged to access a full range of schools and training programs located in the Clubhouse and in the metropolitan community. Students may participate in English as a Second Language (ESL), GED or post-secondary education.
Support includes:
· connecting with local schools
· arranging school tours
· assisting with financial aid and application forms
· monthly where students to share experiences, advise and support
· celebrations and special student recognitions
SOCIAL/RECREATION
Services focus on educational, ethnic and cultural, and social and recreational programming to meet the need for positive social interaction and cultural diversity.
Activities are offered on a daily basis, including evenings, Saturdays and major holidays. They include:
Parties
Bowling
Art
Music
athletic leagues
field trips
cultural/sporting events
workshops
conversation
general interaction with other people
Planning of workshops and social and recreational activities is accomplished by members and staff working together to develop a calendar of events, as well as planning the logistics of their activities.
CASE MANAGEMENT
The goal of case management is to ensure individuals are able to obtain the necessary services.
Vail Place has 6-year collaboration with Hennepin County and the State of Minnesota to provide intensive team case management for individuals at risk of hospitalization. Individual case management services include:
· assessment of needs
· arranging services
· coordinating services
· advocacy
· problem-solving and future planning
The most common problems addressed are:
· housing
· financial, and
· medical care.
Funding for case management services is provided through medical assistance.
ADULT REHABILITATIVE MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES (ARMHS)
These are mental health services which are rehabilitative and enable the recipient to develop and enhance psychiatric stability, social competencies, personal and emotional adjustment, and independent living and community skills, when these abilities are impaired by the symptoms of mental illness.
These services instruct, assist, and support the recipient in areas such as:
· interpersonal communication skills
· community resource utilization and integration skills
· crisis assistance
· relapse prevention skills
· health care directives
· budgeting and shopping skills
· healthy lifestyle skills and practices
· cooking and nutrition skills
· transportation skills
· medication education and monitoring
· mental illness symptom management skills
· household management skills
· employment-related skills
· transition to community living services
Funding for these services is provided by medical assistance.
