What is a Housing Support Specialist?
Housing Support Specialists support Hennepin County Case Management individuals to locate housing and provide ongoing mental health and housing support to individuals discharged from case management.
- Assess housing barriers and strengths of individuals with SPMI experiencing homelessness to determine housing and service needs.
- Help individuals find independent, community-based housing. Find qualified applicants for vacancies and assist applicants through the application process.
- Reduce risk of losing housing by providing access to risk mitigation funds and ongoing support services.
- Identify and develop resources and strengths to maintain housing for duration of lease.
- Support individuals with community-based housing subsidies (e.g., Section 8 voucher) to find housing and assist individuals to apply for long term affordable housing.
- Coordinate with housing subsidy providers and case managers to utilize subsidies, maintain subsidies or request extensions as needed.
- Provide crisis assistance, supportive problem solving, and other ongoing support services as needed.
- Serve as an ongoing liaison between property managers and individuals. Create and maintain consistent communication channels, both verbal and written, between several parties (i.e. tenant, landlord, referral source, collaborating agencies, debtors and creditors).
The ideal candidate is one who:
- Demonstrates empathy and sensitivity to peoples’ stories, past experiences, and trauma,
- Commits to professional and ethical excellence, and
- Embodies cultural competence and emotional intelligence.
- BA or BS in human services or related area, or BSW with valid and current Social Work licensure.
- 1-3 years’ experience in housing. Mental health experience is a plus.
- Must have and maintain a valid Minnesota Driver’s License, maintain automobile coverage and have access to an automobile
Salary and Benefits – $42,000-48,000 DOQ. Full Benefits Package.
